It’s been a long road. But we now have enough of something to share that waiting any more felt impossible. Anyone game master who has ever run a game online has had to make the choice: rely on the random number generator and hope that the computer doesn’t hate you on the night; or try to decipher numbers on a die your player has just rolled through sometime less than crystal clear video feeds. Both solutions work, technically. It’s just never felt quite right.
We’ve been working on that problem since last year. And now we’ve got a proper milestone to share. Dice Link’s camera feed is live, which means your actual dice being rolled at your table now appear inside Foundry VTT. The whole party sees the roll as it happens, not just the number that comes after it.
It’s the first time the physical side of the game has been visible inside the digital one.
Worth being straightforward about what this does and doesn’t do yet. The camera shows you the roll happening. At the moment, you still tap the result into Dice Link yourself, and that’s what lands in Foundry’s chat. We’re not pretending this is the finished picture, it’s a stepping stone, and an important one, since it’s the first time the physical side of the game has been visible inside the digital one.
What comes next is getting Dice Link to read the dice faces itself, so that tap becomes unnecessary. That’s the milestone we’re building towards. This update is proof we’re heading in the right direction, one working piece at a time. And with more updates coming soon, let’s see if we can bring the magic of real dice to the digital world.
